Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)

An electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) is a visual representation of the electrical activity of your heart. It helps your doctor evaluate your heart. This test:

  • Is safe and painless.
  • Can be done in a hospital, test center, or doctor’s office.
  • Takes about 10 minutes from start to finish.

During Your EKG

  • Your skin may be cleaned with alcohol to allow the electrodes to stick to your skin better.
  • Small pads (electrodes) are placed on your chest to monitor your heartbeat.
  • You may be asked to hold still or hold your breath.
  • After the tracing is obtained the stickers are removed.

After Your EKG

  • Return to normal activity unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.
  • Be sure to keep follow-up appointments.
